Peer Reviewing for Fehim_s3640407

1/ Is there sufficient difference between FORMAL and INFORMAL design ?

RUBBISH FONT

This is the Formal design artwork which based on the Dominance principle. At the first glance, I pay all attention to the letters of "Rubbish". They represent as Dominants, the objects that give the most visual weight compared to the other elements. Subsequently, the flies and circulated lines are Sub-Dominants and Subordinates respectively. In order, Sub-Dominant gives the secondary emphasis; while Subordinate gives the least stress.

CD COVER

The front CD cover is also the Formal design that based on Dominant and Balance principles. Similarly with the 'Rubbish Font' Dominance concept, the title of 'Trance Anthems' refers to the Dominant in this wholly composition. Next, the 3D modeling Face is the Sub-Dominant. Finally, the singers' names that placed at the bottom are the Subordinates.
On the other hand, in regard with 'Balance' principle, I could mentally imagine that there is a vertical line placed in the middle of the cover. It separates the left and right elements equally. Therefore, it is the Symmetrical Balance

LINE ANIMATION

Fehim had done a great 'Electrical Lines' animation. It imitated the 'Heart Beats' that we usually see on the hospital machines. For me, this is the Formal design animation. It is implemented with the 'Balance' principle. In general, the red button plays as the 'Vertical Line' that dividing the two green grid circle into the equal spaces. In addition, it is looked like as the circle on the one side is mirrored the remaining on the other side. Thus, this constructs the Symmetrical Balance.

2/ Is the concept appropriate for INFORMAL ?

None of them are the 'Informal Design', whereas they are the 'Formal Design'. Especially, there are two of them related to 'Symmetrical Balance'. It is contrary to the concept of 'Informal Design' that refers to 'Asymmetrical Balance' principle.

3/ Give suggestions how improvements can be made & how ideas can be developed further (look at the use of space, colour, tone, type, scale, etc)

 RUBBISH FONT

As Fehim has inspired from the ideas of “smelly summer time rubbish and the garbage trucks driving through the city streets dripping hot rubbish juices that got squeezed by the trucks compactor”, therefore I suggest that if he changes the blank background to the concrete floor image, the context will better adapt to the predefined ‘Street’ sight.

CD COVER

The negative space can be improved by lightening its foreground colour. As its genre involved to fiction which is related to universe, Fehim has skilfully create effects such as: Fired Explosion and Stars Sky. However, the more complex the background is, the more shadowy it deepens the foreground elements. Besides, the foreground is originally quite dark with grey colour. This may make the fore elements easily sink into the background when the blending effect applied to them. Therefore, if the foreground changing the colour to bright tone, it would make ‘3D Face’ stand out more clearly.
Finally, there is some technical problem appeared when the foreground trying to blend into the background. As the foreground right cutting edge is till vividly seen; this caused by the different colour and size unmatched between the foreground and the background. Thus, in my opinion, it would be better if we use the ‘Blur’ tool to reduce the edging visibility.

LINE ANIMATION

I like the idea of 'Pulses' that Fehim has tried to imprint to our mind by the sharp-edged ‘Electrical Lines’ moving across the two green grids circles. For me, it has successfully makes the audiences in thought of ‘Heart Beats’ which related to the author’s concept of “Pulses’. Thus, there is no need to make any change in this animation. However, the red button should be improved by applying ‘glowing-inner’ effect to make it look more ‘real’.

4/ Rate the
overall aesthetic and explain why ?
use s.w.o.t analysis

strength > what is good about the work ?

 RUBBISH FONT

Its good point is that clearly expressing the ‘Smelling’ letters by decorating around the typeface with the circulated circles and flies

CD COVER

Fehim has completely depicted his concept of “Universe” by creating shiny stars sky effects. In fact, it is the first thing that painted on my mind, I absolutely thought about universal space when I looked at it.

LINE ANIMATION

This refers to the ‘Pulses’ concept that normally appear on the mechanical things (hospital machines) by animating the sharp-edged lines over the grids cirles.

weaknesses > what is not working ?

 RUBBISH FONT

The idea of ‘Hot rubbish juices’ is not decoded clearly by the audiences. The typefaces look like the ‘art drawing’ letters.

CD COVER

The foreground is still not completely merged into the background as we still see its visualized cutting edges. Furthermore, the ‘3D face’ is quite shadowy that compared to the background colour.

LINE ANIMATION

The button is not physically visualized as it looks like the ‘imaging’ circle that drawn on the screen.

opportunities > what can the work be improved ?

The improvements are as same as the above (Question 3)

threats > what is / may deny the work from succeeding ?
RUBBISH FONT

It may make the audience misunderstand the ‘Rubbish Juices’ to the ‘Art Letters’

CD COVER

It rather looks like a fiction movie VCD cover than a music CD cover

LINE ANIMATION

The red button is not enough ‘realistic’ to describe a characteristic of a physical form.

MWEB Design

As the ‘M’ letter was composed with orange font and white background, therefore I made the web page background orange. It would look likely that orange colour from ‘M’ flowed out to the background. Then, the top of the page and the main content backgrounds were white. Besides, in similarity with the logo typeface, the content texts also used Century Gothic font.
As a result, these would create a unity sense between the logo and the web page.
